The Open Championship's Claret Jug
Six of our senior pupils were today given a very special opportunity to visit Portadown Golf Club with Mr Blevins and be photographed with the famous Claret Jug that will be presented to the winner of the Open Championship, being hosted right here at Royal Portrush this summer.
The Claret Jug is the trophy every male golfer dreams of holding aloft. It is presented to the winner of The Open each year to recognise the Champion Golfer of the Year.
Many of the greatest names to ever play the game have claimed it over the years, including Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer and Seve Ballesteros to name but a few.
The six lucky pupils, all of whom have already started to develop their own golfing skills at the club, engaged in some putting and pitching games, before getting to study the countless household names on the famous old trophy. Perhaps one of them could some day follow Fred Daley, Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke, by winning an Open Championship and becoming the fourth Northern Ireland golfer to have their name engraved on the most famous trophy in world golf.
A big thank you to Portadown Golf Club for their invitation to be part of this very special occasion.
