🎉 National Numeracy Day 2026

We had a fantastic day celebrating National Numeracy Day across the school, with a real focus on exploring how maths is used in everyday life.

This year’s theme was “Count on Your Community,” and this was at the heart of everything we did throughout the day. During the morning assembly, Mr Mitchell, our Numeracy Coordinator, introduced the theme and discussed how numeracy is used in a wide range of jobs within our community. Pupils were encouraged to think about the different careers they might have in the future and how numbers play a role in all of them.

It was particularly interesting to see pupils’ reactions as they realised that even jobs they might not usually associate with maths still use numbers every day — showing that numeracy really is everywhere.

To get everyone involved, Mr Mitchell set the children a fun and creative challenge inspired by the local bonfire — to design and build the best structure they could using materials from their classroom.

Throughout the day, there was a strong “pens down maths” focus, with an emphasis on:

  • practical activities
  • teamwork
  • discussion
  • and talking about numbers in real-life contexts

Classrooms were buzzing with energy as pupils worked together to plan, build and problem-solve. It was fantastic to see such a wide range of creative structures and to hear pupils confidently discussing how they were using numeracy in their designs.

It was clear that the children really embraced the opportunity to do something a little bit different, while still developing their maths skills in a meaningful and enjoyable way.

A great day was had by all, and it was wonderful to see such positive attitudes towards numeracy throughout the school.

It was also great to see the effort and enthusiasm during the Kahoot quizzes in the assembly hall throughout the day. Well done to all of our winners across each year group, who were awarded a certificate for being the top performers in their class quiz — a brilliant achievement!
